OFFICE MANAGER FOR GRADUATE STUDENT LEGAL AID OFFICE (15 hrs/week)

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Graduate Student Legal Aid Office is hiring a graduate student for the position of Office Manager to work in our Stamp Student Union office 15 hours a week. This is a twelve month student employee position (hourly rate of pay, no benefits, no tuition remission).
The Graduate Student Legal Aid Office is a part-time program of the Graduate Student Government. We provide legal information and related assistance to individual graduate students. We also conduct legal workshops and other educational activities for the graduate student community, including a content-based website covering a wide range of legal topics. The office is staffed by a director/attorney, a paralegal, and an office manager.
The Office Manager runs the office on a day-to-day basis, handling all administrative, clerical, and general office matters. The office manager reports directly to the Paralegal and Director/Attorney, depending on the specific project or tasks. Duties include:
- responding to phone inquiries
- monitoring incoming emails
- editing outgoing correspondence and other documents
- conducting client satisfaction surveys
- budget management and office purchases
- greeting clients and assisting them in filling out initial paperwork
- general case management duties including data entry, filing, and maintaining office statistics
- maintaining the office website, including updating non-content based information and resources
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate student in good standing at the University of Maryland - College Park
- Available to work 15 hours a week (schedule to be determined) in Stamp Union office
- Highly organized with excellent oral and written communication skills
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse graduate student population
- Good computer skills, including familiarity with Word, Excel, web-based research, and general website maintenance
- Able to work independently and as a member of a legal team on specific cases/projects
- Prior experience in legal setting or equivalent preferred but not required
SALARY:
$18/hour based on timesheet submissions

PARALEGAL FOR GRADUATE STUDENT LEGAL AID OFFICE (20 hrs/week)

SALARY: $25.00/HR with no benefits

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Graduate Student Legal Aid Office (GLAO) is hiring a paralegal to work 20 hours a week in our Stamp Student Union office. This is a Contingent Category 1 hourly position with no tuition remission or other benefits.
GLAO is a part-time program providing legal information and related assistance to graduate students on both campus and non-campus matters. The office also has an active outreach and education program, including a content-based website devoted to a wide range of legal topics. The office is staffed by a Director/Attorney, Paralegal, and Office Manager. The paralegal works under the supervision of the Director/Attorney.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- conducting intake and follow-up interviews with graduate students seeking legal information and assistance; providing general information on topics such as basic landlord-tenant rights, consumer rights, traffic violations, and insurance grievance procedures
- conducting basic legal and related research; drafting memoranda, correspondence, and simple documents for the attorney's review
- assisting the attorney in conducting workshops on legal topics; representing GLAO at informational sessions and similar campus events; developing and implementing graduate student outreach and educational projects; working cooperatively with other campus programs, such as Off-Campus Housing and International Education Services
- providing on-site assistance to graduate students using web-based legal self-help programs; developing and maintaining resource and referral manual
- providing supervision and training for office manager and student interns (as applicable)
- if student is a full-time student at College Park campus, serving as student advocate for graduate students charged with academic or disciplinary violations
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Prior work experience as legal assistant, paralegal, or equivalent required
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Good basic legal research and computer skills, including familiarity with Westlaw and/or Lexis-Nexis
- Good time-management and organizational skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse graduate student population
- Ability to work independently and as member of a legal team
- If applicant is a student, must be in good standing with the University
